The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is a pillar of Calgary’s vibrant arts community and since 1955, has grown to be one of Canada’s most celebrated live music ensembles. Each Season, the CPO presents classical masterworks, pop favourites, bold collaborations, and cutting-edge new works. Led by Music Director Rune Bergmann, the CPO consistently attracts world renowned guest artists and dynamic conductors. The CPO serves as an active leader in the community providing educational performances and outreach opportunities for students, seniors, and other charitable organizations. KARL HIRZER, Associate Conductor
Karl Hirzer is a Canadian conductor and pianist from New Westminster, British Columbia. He is Associate Conductor with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. In the past, he has acted as Assistant Conductor for the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, and the McGill Contemporary Music Ensemble. Hirzer has also worked with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra as an active member of the Menuhin Festival Gstaad Conducting Academy, and was a Conducting Fellow during the 2017 Cortona Sessions for New Music. A diverse musician and collaborator, he has performed with numerous renowned soloists such as Evelyn Glennie, Chris Botti, and Jonathan Crow. His teachers have been Guillaume Bourgogne, Alexis Hauser, Boris Brott and Ajtony Csaba; and he has participated in masterclass sessions with Neeme Järvi, Leonid Grin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Chris Younghoon Kim, and Zsolt Nagy. Trained as a pianist, Hirzer holds bachelor’s (University of Victoria) and master’s (McGill University) degrees in performance, as well an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto diploma, obtained at the age of seventeen. His piano teachers have included Ilya Poletaev, Bruce Vogt, Walter Prossnitz and Anne Wilson Unger. He also attended the Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Salzburg, where he studied in the class of Robert Levin. |
ALBERTA TREBLE CHOIR
The Alberta Treble Choir is a massed treble choir comprised of nearly 200 singers from high school and community treble choirs across southern Alberta. Students from Alberta High School of Fine Arts, Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, William Aberhart High School & Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, as well as members of Cantaré Children's Choir & Calgary Girls Choir, will come together to perform alongside the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in this concert. |
CATHERINE GLASER-CLIMIE, Alberta Treble Choir rehearsal conductor
Catherine Glaser-Climie has nurtured and inspired singers of all ages through her acclaimed work with choirs and singers for more than thirty years. Choirs under her direction have won awards at the local, provincial and national level and have regularly performed with Calgary Opera, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and are frequently heard on radio and television. In addition, her choirs have been invited to perform at many prestigious events and have toured extensively throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. Her choirs have twice performed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip in Edmonton and in Ottawa. Currently she is Founder & Artistic Director of the Cantaré Children’s Choir in Calgary, a nationally-acclaimed programme of one hundred and fifty singers ages six to eighteen. She also serves as Minister of Music at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Cross. In demand to share her expertise with all levels and ages, and known for her captivating warmth and enthusiasm, invitations to appear as adjudicator, lecturer and clinician take Catherine across North America. Recognized as a leader, she is active in many professional organizations, was a member of the Artistic Council for PODIUM 2016, and currently serves on the Program Advisory Committee for Choir Alberta. Catherine’s contribution to Canada’s musical community has been acknowledged with special awards from Choral Canada, Choir Alberta, The Alberta Kodaly Assoociation and the City of Calgary. |
EVAN MOUNCE, Alberta Treble Choir pianist
Pianist Evan Mounce enjoys a close association with Calgary Opera, Cowtown Opera, Cantaré Children’s Choir, and the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus. He also works as a freelancer; vocal coaching aspiring stars and fully-fledged ones including k.d. lang. Primarily a self-taught pianist (Piano for Dummies circa 2003), in 2015 Evan decided to get serious about lessons and currently studies with Kathleen van Mourik. Evan holds a MMus from the University of Toronto in saxophone performance. His favourite artistic collaboration is with his wife, soprano Laura Brandt, and may soon include music-making with their young son! |
MAYA BUDZINSKI, violin
Edmonton native Maya Budzinski, student of Mount Royal University Prof. William van der Sloot had her solo debut with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra at 10 years of age playing Bruch’s Violin Concerto after she won the Northern Alberta Concerto Competition. Maya has received many scholarships such as Winspear, Shean, and Alexandra Munn to name a few. Since 2014 Maya won first place 3 times at the Canadian Music Competition and last year she won the Grand Prize where she was awarded the opportunity to play with the Metropolitain Orchestre de Montreal the Sibelius Violin Concerto, broadcasted live via the MediciTV to 120 countries. |
JACOB KRYGER, marimba
Jacob Kryger has been playing percussion since the age of eight. Now 20, he has been studying with Brian Jones, Principal Percussion of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, for the past nine years. Jacob is entering his final year at the University of Alberta in the Bachelor of Music program with a Major in Percussion Performance where he continues to study with Mr. Jones. He plans on continuing his music education in a master’s program next year. |
