FOR THE LOVE OF CANADIAN MUSIC: THE ROLE OF PERFORMERS AND EDUCATORS TO CELEBRATE AND SUPPORT ITS LEGACY | Sylvia Shadick-Taylor

The session is intended to celebrate our rich Canadian music legacy and discuss the importance of performers and educators to promote this legacy further.

Edmonton pianist Sylvia Shadick-Taylor will address the need for performers to program Canadian music. This 2009 Ambassador of the Canadian Music centre will also address ways that performers can develop partnerships with composers to their mutual benefit, andwill share various resources available to find Canadian repertoire.

As Violet Archer understood, it is vitally important to the development of our Canadian music culture to introduce contemporary music at the student level. The session will address ways that contemporary music can be presented to students, both within school music programs, and in the private studio to develop their understanding, appreciation and subsequent enjoyment of contemporary music.
The session will also touch on ways for educators to encourage creativity. Having students explore composition themselves could possibly lead to them considering it as their musical life goal.

"I feel very strongly that works from previous decades should be explored to create the opportunity for the discovery/culling process to happen, which in turn gives worthy repertoire an active life."

MEETING THE NEEDS OF MODERN STUDENTS WITH CONSERVATORY CANADA | Derek Oger

This live virtual presentation will focus on using Conservatory Canada developed materials to support the modern teaching studio and the desires of modern students.  The presentation will be given remotely by Conservatory Canada Executive Director Derek Oger, using CC's eExam technology.  The flexibility and benefits of virtual examinations will be illustrated as well as the need for contemporary materials in meeting the needs of the modern teaching studio.  Derek will also give an overview of CC's new Contemporary Idioms Piano syllabus with special emphasis on its new improvisation requirement, which features the use of the American Popular Piano Etudes Series as a manual.  By harnessing and working with a student's aural skill (sound before symbol), students can learn to improvise freely and spontaneously within the context provided by APP's backing tracks to stimulate their creativity.
