Join 2006 Juno-nominated Aboriginal trio singer, elementary educator, and music therapist, Sherryl Sewepagaham, in an interactive workshop geared towards students in Divisions I, II, and III. Sherryl will share originally-composed songs and social songs gifted to her from various First Nations singers in Canada. Songs will be taught in the oral tradition using traditional hide drums, rattles, and sticks. All songs vary in complexity and language, and cultural protocol and song histories will also be shared. Please bring a recording device to capture the oral songs.

REHEARSAL LAB – SHUMAYELA (JUNIOR HIGH CHOIR)

Rehearsal labs are intended to give delegates the opportunity observe a conductor and their ensemble at work. The conductor will periodically "pause" the rehearsal to explain to delegates which of their tools are in use, and why they've chosen that particular approach. Delegates will have the opportunity to pose questions in a brief Q+A at the end of the session.  Through the rehearsal labs, delegates will gain insight into rehearsal structure, choral techniques, and educational approaches, as well as learn new choral warm ups and hear excellent choral repertoire.

THE ROAD TO SINGING IN HARMONY USING WORLD MUSICS FOR GRADES 3-6 | Kathy Robinson

Developing children’s skills in singing in harmony follows a path that begins with accurate unison singing and progresses through singing ostinatos, countermelodies, partner songs, and rounds before reaching accurate singing in tertian harmony. This session follows this path through  using songs from a variety of world musical traditions including a Zimbabwean story song, a Ukrainian spring song, a Maori fishing song and others from Asia, Latin America  and the African diaspora. Detailed notes including the literature, specific strategies for each step of the sequence, traditions that seem to exemplify various steps, and a list of resources where this diverse song material can be found will be distributed. This session  is aimed at  elementary classroom music teachers.
