ALBERTA MUSIC CURRICULUM PANEL

A representative from Alberta Education will present an update on the progress of the curriculum writing project along with teachers who are members of the curriculum working group.

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC TEACHER. ASSORTED TIPS & RANDOM THOUGHTS | Sarah Drew & Adam Mailman

We all do certain things that make our job easier throughout our school year.  We have learned a few tricks of the trade, or a few forms, procedures or processes that help keep things organized and aligned with our vision.  What happens in June to make sure you are prepared for the fall?  What are some ways to establish relationships and continue to hear your student’s voices throughout the year?  Where do you fit creativity and theory into a year full of performances?   Come and hear from two middle school teachers who have some ideas to share, with time at the end to share some of yours.

DOUBLE REED WORKSHOP | Warrant Office Benoit Parent & Sergeant Selina Keo

Presented by Warrant Officer Benoit Parent and Sergeant Selina Kuo of the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, this session on double reeds for teachers will include tips on hand placement, posture, embouchure, creating quality sounds, repertoire, trouble-shooting issues that frequently arise with young players, and care and maintenance of double reed instruments.  Delegates will also be treated to a performance by Sgt. Kuo and WO Parent.

EMPOWER YOUR PERCUSSIONISTS | Rob Maciak

The objective of this workshop is to inform intermediary and secondary instrumental school music teachers of the fact that it is possible to empower their percussion students to develop their own senses of mechanical intuition and problem solving skills in order to "succeed on their own in the back." It is no secret that the percussion section of any band programme is chronically neglected - but this is not the fault of the conductor; it is simply the fault of the inherent structure of the classroom, the repertoire, etc. The prime objective of my research is to show you how to give your percussionists what they need to spend their dead time "in the back" effectively while teaching themselves how to enhance the soundscape of your orchestra or band.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR MUSICIANS | Glen Sather Performing Arts Clinicians

Staff from the new Performing Arts Medicine Clinic at the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic in Edmonton will be presenting a workshop on health and wellness for musicians and music educators. The focus will be on your own health, and will include topics such as: physical and musical training for musicians; musician ergonomics; recognizing and dealing with chronic injuries; managing stress and performance anxiety; and rest and recovery. Target audience: primarily instrumental musicians, though vocalists are also welcome to attend.

HONOR YOUR MENTORS - IGNITE YOUR PASSION | Dr. Dale Lonis

Dr. Lonis has spent a lifetime studying the excellence that is within each of us and how it can be identified, actualized and shared. He will challenge those in attendance to identify what has inspired them to be the teacher and person they have come to be and how they can continue to use that inspiration to inspire others to greatness.

HOW INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TRAINING AFFECTS THE BRAIN  | Pam Paddock and Dale Lonis

Music should be learned first and foremost for the sake of music. However, as music educators we also see many spin-off benefits for our students because they are a part of a musical ensemble. In this session, we will do a brief overview of some parts of the brain, then discuss how instrumental music training benefits the brain both structurally and cognitively over time.  The session is easy to follow without having any neuroscience background, and will include a link to a couple of easy-to-understand promotional materials at the end.

INCORPORATING WORLD MUSIC INTO YOUR CURRICULUM | Adam Mason

Hands-on Workshop!  Play traditional African drumming on authentic instruments and dance a traditional dance.  These are interspersed with discussion of strategies to incorporate World Music into a wide variety of subjects including Social Studies, Band, Humanities, History, Mathematics, Music and more.

JAZZ BAND WORKSHOP

Featuring the Rhythm Gunners Big Band of the Royal Canadian Artillery Band under the direction of Sgt Martin Walters, and saxophonist, Eric Marienthal

This session will focus on many of the things we need in order to improve our jazz skills and overall musicianship. Eric will be highlighting jazz improvisation, reading, ensemble playing, ear training and a whole lot more.

MUSIC THE UNIVERSAL: EMBEDDING TECHNOLOGY INTO MUSIC EDUCATION | Michael Cutler

An introduction to the successful integration of technology in a mixed-ability band room. This session will cover different approaches to integrating technology for recording, composing, arranging and writing music in new meaningful ways. Lesson plans, program of studies, and elements of digital composition through the lens of SAMR and TPACK will be covered.

WORKING WITH ADMINISTRATORS | Irene Nordheim

This session will be geared to middle and high school music instructors. We cannot assume that everyone in education knows why they should value music education. Therefore we need to learn how to educate not only our students but the community in which we work. The give and take discussion will focus on the promotion of music programs and how music teachers can avoid shooting themselves and their programs in the foot when it comes to dealing with administrators and colleagues.
